The process of packing your family’s entire life, placing it into a myriad of cardboard boxes, and transporting everything across town can be a very hectic process. In addition to the moving day itself, there are the logistics concerning pets, valuables, children, address changes, and more.
If you want all your belongings to arrive safely at their destination, it can be more than useful to hire a moving company that works to deliver quality results in a safe, effective manner. Check their review to ensure the overall feedback from past clientele is positive.
Although you could hire a moving service to pack your belongings, most people choose to do that part themselves. Therefore, we’ve compiled a list of moving tips to help you avoid any unnecessary headaches on the big day.
Common moving mistakes
Now it’s time to take a look at a few common moving mistakes that you should avoid. Doing (or not doing) these things are guaranteed to help your next residential move go more smoothly and help the whole process be just a little bit less stressful. And that’s something we all need.
Here is the list of common moving mistakes:
Not planning ahead
The initial and crucial step to successful packing is meticulous planning. Unfortunately, some individuals neglect this essential aspect and dive into packing haphazardly. To prevent wasting time and resources, it’s imperative to establish a well-thought-out strategy for packing your belongings. Take the time to make mental notes or jot down your packing game plan. Decide where to commence packing, whether it’s the living room or kitchen, identify items for disposal, and outline how you intend to pack. Ideally, start planning at least a month before your moving date to allow ample time for selecting appropriate packing materials.
Not getting enough supplies
Another common mistake homeowners make is underestimating the amount of packing materials required. Picture this scenario: you’ve taken time off work to begin packing, only to discover that you’ve run out of packing tape or boxes due to poor planning. This predicament often arises when a proper plan is absent. To avoid such inconveniences, calculate the number of boxes needed for your possessions accurately. When determining which packing supplies to purchase, ensure you procure a sufficient quantity or even extras as a precautionary measure.
Not using a moving checklist
Whether you prefer recording tasks in a physical notebook or digitally entering them, it’s vital to maintain a comprehensive moving checklist. The moving process involves numerous simultaneous activities, and relying on memory, especially during stressful times, is ill-advised. Create detailed checklists covering various aspects of your move, such as what items to pack and necessary travel arrangements for long-distance relocations. As you complete each task, check it off your list. This method will not only give you a sense of accomplishment but also ensure that nothing is overlooked on the final day when you vacate your old home.
Started packing too late
The stress and chaos that comes with an ill-prepared move should be enough to motivate anyone to get started ASAP when it comes to packing. Unfortunately, many people avoid this vital task until the last second. Failing to plan properly and box your things appropriately can lead to an organizational disaster. From loading your belongings into the truck to finding where it is at the new place, packing punctually will help to save a lot of headaches and wasted time.
You can best avoid this issue by simply starting early. Once everything is in place to relocate to a new abode, start putting together a list and begin gathering boxes shortly thereafter. Even if it feels excessively early, placing rarely used items into boxes throughout your house can help to save hours of effort when you’re pressed for time.
Packing too much
Whether people realize it or not, they tend to collect large numbers of possessions over time. The moving process often helps to declutter the excess items you don’t need, but for people who have been in one locale for a long time, extra efforts will be needed before moving day.
One effective way of minimizing the clutter in your life is to get rid of the stuff that you do not need. From garage sales to donations, anyone needing to offload their extra junk can do so in ways that either earn extra gas money or help the less fortunate. Doing so will take a great weight off your mind when it comes to moving logistics. Since you will not need to worry about packing and moving the extra stuff that is not needed, you will end up saving time and money in the process.
Not labeling the boxes
Effective box labeling greatly simplifies the unpacking process and minimizes stress. You don’t need to itemize the contents of each box; instead, provide brief descriptions of the items inside and indicate their intended locations in your new residence. For instance, label your moving boxes with specific categories, like “kitchen utensils” or “winter clothes.” Thorough labeling facilitates efficient organization in your new home. It is essential to use permanent markers for labeling to ensure readability for movers.
Failure to set a budget
While it’s impossible to predict moving costs down to the last cent, it’s prudent to estimate the overall expenses involved in your move. This is especially crucial if you are working within a specific budget range. Experiencing sticker shock after the move is a common occurrence, but it can be mitigated by conducting preliminary research to determine your comfort zone in terms of expenditure and the necessary budget allocation.
Not decluttering in advance
Decluttering is not only essential for maintaining organization but also critical if you are moving to a smaller or differently configured space. Even if you’re relocating to a larger residence, it is probable that you no longer require or want some of your current belongings. A frequent moving oversight is packing items you intend to discard or donate upon arrival at your new destination. Hosting a garage or yard sale before leaving your old home is a sensible approach adopted by many to streamline the moving process. However you choose to do it, getting rid of things you don’t need in advance is a great hack.
Waiting too long to book the movers
According to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, just over 40 million Americans move each year. So waiting to book a moving company can be disastrous. If your move falls during the peak moving season, securing movers well in advance is imperative to secure your preferred moving date. Even during off-peak periods, like holidays or winter, early mover booking is advisable. Booking movers as soon as you confirm your moving plans provides you with a broader range of scheduling options and ensures competitive rates.
Packing valuables improperly
Properly protecting your valuables is paramount. Whether you need additional bubble wrap for fragile items or secure storage for jewelry and precious belongings, investing time in learning the correct packing techniques is worthwhile. For irreplaceable items, consider seeking advice from professional movers, who can offer valuable tips on safeguarding your possessions. They possess expertise in handling such matters, and their input can help ensure your belongings reach their destination in pristine condition.
Neglecting to change your address
To facilitate a seamless transition during your move, it is essential to notify the post office of your new address in advance. The United States Postal Service provides a convenient process for mail forwarding. Simply complete the change-of-address form on their website, specifying the date you wish to commence mail delivery at your new residence. This simple procedure takes only a few minutes and significantly reduces potential hassles.
Simultaneously, contact your utility company to arrange for the discontinuation of services, such as electricity, at your previous address. By taking these steps, you can avoid unnecessary utility bill payments after you have vacated your former home.
Making Pet Arrangements
As our previous blogs have noted, it can be difficult to properly prepare for moving homes with your furry relatives in tow. In the chaos of making preparations with dutiful friends and packing everything into cardboard confines, some Coloradans forget where and how to move their pets. Remember, as always, to plan out in advance this phase, making arrangements with relatives or trusted comrades. Adequate space is needed for kennels, beds, and the pet’s possessions in order to help with a stress-free move. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and getting the pets into their new place without anxiety will pay off for everyone in the end.
Accounting For House Plants
Similar to your domestic animals, the tamed plant life in your home will also need to be accounted for before starting the moving process. Beyond the physical considerations, certain varieties of plants may not be allowed at your new homestead, especially if it crosses state lines. Even if all the packing is done precisely, it won’t matter if they can’t get to the new place!
Packing and transporting plant life can be done by your moving company if certain conditions are met. Many people take on the task themselves, putting in the effort to get their greenery safely to the new home. The act of moving a plant creates a set of unique logistical demands that will be unique to each individual. A few main points would include:
Load the plants last, minimizing time in the car.
Keep your plants out of the trunk if at all possible.
Ensure all plants will remain upright during transport.
Keep the temperature and sunlight in the car controlled.
Be sure the plants are not watered shortly before leaving and do not water them until you reach the new destination (distance pending).
Forgetting To Take Measurements
Part of the planning process should include taking measurements at your new and old residences. Furniture is often larger than we remember, and getting that awkward recliner through the front door may present a challenge. Doorway sizes may change, as well as stairs and landings. Planning your move will help to visualize this intense process as well.
Hiring a professional moving company can prove useful in limiting much of the stress and sweat involved with large items. Beyond our control, though, are the limitations placed on your furniture by the new abode. Measuring your space before the moving truck arrives is a big step in avoiding three-dimensional headaches later.
Packing Prohibited Items
Your local moving company will be more than happy to move a majority of your possessions in a safe and efficient manner, but some items simply cannot be moved. In many cases, firearms, high valuables, and hazardous substances will not be accepted. This is done for both the safety of our residential movers as well as the safety of your property. Be sure to discuss exactly what is or isn’t allowed on the truck and make arrangements accordingly. Otherwise, you may be stuck with a box of chemicals and batteries with nowhere to put them!
Forgetting The Essentials
The day of your move will no-doubt be hectic. Our home movers will be happy to minimize the stress of the process, but it will fall on you to prepare your survival kit for the first 24 hours. Everything from soap to deodorant to even cash for takeout food will help to make the transition as smooth as possible. Inhalers, medication, and your kid’s needed nightlight are all part of the daily process, and avoiding disruptions will only lead to a smoother move and more high fives once all is said and done.
Moving mistake summary
There are many mistakes that can be made when moving to your new place. Working to avoid these costly errors can help to make the process much more enjoyable. Ok, maybe not enjoyable, but definitely less stressful.

Abe Lincoln Movers did an amazing job. They took extra care with the items that needed careful packaging and handled the heavy, awkward furniture without any issues or damage to the furniture or walls. The movers were respectful, professional, and considerate of both the personal belongings and business items that required extra attention. I would definitely hire this company again for any future moving needs.
Used this company for my last 3 moves over the past 5 years, and constantly the movers are on time, courteous, and efficient. This past move Jose and Sterling delivered exceptional service! Ron also was sure to call to check in a couple times before and after the move to check in to confirm the time and make sure all went well. Highly recommend, and will definitely use again. Thanks!
These guys are awesome! We had so many problems with the first movers we hired, as well as headaches with PODS, but Ron and his crew were a breath of professional fresh air. These guys are prompt, professional, and do a great job at a great price. I even paid extra to hire them again to come back down and help move heavy equipment in my garage. They are just that good!!
Ron and his team are awesome! They delivered such stellar service and did a fantastic job moving us out of our apartment. We were in a pinch and needed to make some last minute changes and they were able to accommodate our moving needs from start to finish. They were a joy to work with and ensured our items were packed up strategically and safely. I am so thankful for their help and could not recommend them enough!
Abe Lincoln Movers is an amazing local company that truly prides itself on providing excellent customer service and a quality professional moving experience. Ron was so accommodating in planning all the various steps of our move to include short-term storage at a very fair price. Jose and Ramon were our actual movers. They were very diligent and mindful regarding our home and personal belongings. They were hardworking, accommodating, and kind. They seemed to really care and clearly take pride in providing quality service. The price is fair, reliability outstanding, diligent in caring for customers home and belongings and the people providing the service are top notch.
José and Sterling were awesome. Got us moved from our 2 bedroom to another 2 bedroom quick and easy. They were on time and treated our home and belongings with care. Highly recommended.
I’ve used them several times over the past 10 years. Always on time, reliable, fair pricing, and they have gone above and beyond to ensure we have the best experience possible. We will be using them again later this year. Thanks guys!
Everything went pretty smooth, and the move was completed within a 2 hour window so no additional fees were required. There was a slight issue with the scheduling where I wasn’t added to the schedule by accident but they still showed up on the agreed upon day, just 90 min later than anticipated. The scheduler admitted his mistake and apologized. Jose and Raman did a good job.
I have a lot of antique and very heavy furniture—some is of which is fragile. Jose and Sterling moved it all without breaking a thing. They were hard-working and very pleasant. I highly recommend them.
This is my second move with Abe Lincoln and both times have been great. Jose and Roman were an awesome team who went above and beyond to work quickly and effectively. Thanks for the help!
Jose and Jesse were really excellent. They made the move seamlessly. They were very fast, efficient, personable and polite. I would highly recommend Abe Lincoln Movers.
Punctual. Good value. Took good care of stuff. Uses for packing and moving. Only comment is watch if it is raining or snow melting as truck leaked and got a few things wet.
Update- Not misled. Job was not finished as we had to go back and get over 20 boxes with the u-haul we rented. Movers were complaining the whole time.Don't recommend. Movers were not prepared for the move. I called their boss and after they said their boss called them lazy. We had to rent a u-haul because the truck was too small & they still didn't finish getting all the boxes at our old house. A few items were chipped and broken due to them rushing.
Alan and Erik were fantastic ! They were friendly, communicative, and efficient. During a stressful move, I was very stoked to have Alan and Erik helping out.
Movers showed up on time and were very professional. Courteous and very cognizant of walls, doors, and items they were moving out of our old house and into the new!!!

Thank you Abe Lincoln movers, you are a lifesaver. As a local artist I have a lot of antiques that I'm working on and I'm very scared to have anybody move them however AJ and his crew at Abe Lincoln movers were kind, courteous and very trustworthy. They moved my beautiful antique coffee table to my new place with no issues thank you guys again we'll be using you soon.
Ron and Alan were so amazing, not only fast and extremely kind to the whole family, but both took the time to give the nosey kids some attention and make them feel included in the day. Awesome hustle the whole morning and even finished early!! Top notch for sure would highly recommend this moving company!
Absolutely the best experience I have had with movers. I needed some stuff moved out and to storage but was getting such high quotes from all the companies I found, until I found this amazing place. The price was beyond fair and the quality of the work done is outstanding. Nothing got broke and the movers were very friendly and helpful with all of my requests and needs.
Great experience with Abe Lincoln Movers! The team is professional, punctual, and cares about your belongings and valuables. Communication is clear. Highly recommend for anyone needing reliable service in Denver.
From start to finish our experience was amazing! From scheduling to moving day! The movers were very careful with our stuff and not 1 thing got broken. They asked questions didn't assume. We moved a 4 bedroom house. Jose, Sterling, Jesse and Daveion were excellent! Knowledgeable, prompt and kind! Would definitely recommend to anyone who is moving!
I had an amazing experience with this moving company. From start to finish, the team was professional, friendly, and extremely efficient. They arrived on time, handled all my belongings with care, sterling and Jose made the entire moving process so much less stressful. What really stood out was how respectful and hardworking the movers were—they went above and beyond to make sure everything was set up exactly how I wanted it.

Abe Lincoln Movers were outstanding! This is actually my second time using them for a move. They were fast, efficient, and careful with our heavy furniture. They came fully prepared with wrap, big boxes, trolleys, and tools that made the move go so smoothly. Daveion, Jose, and Ken were professional, hard working and a made my move a breeze. Highly recommend, thanks Abe Lincoln Movers!
We hired Abe Lincoln Movers to remove furniture, (some quite heavy), household & personal items & packed 3 Pods on 3 separate days.We also hired them to unpack 2 Pods and move everything into our new home. The movers always arrived at the scheduled time, worked quickly & efficiently, with no damage to our belongings or to doors or walls in either location. They were respectful & professional from start to finish! The price checked reflects each pod—moving & loading Pod, then unpacking the Pod & moving contents into new home.We highly recommend Abe Lincoln Movers! Thank you to Jose & Sterling who packed & unpacked the majority of our Pods!
Sterling and Jose were killer! These guys moved our 1 bed 1 bath to a larger unit about 24 miles away in the Denver metro, very timely & professional. Sterling and Jose were an amazing crew and were funny guys! I appreciated their help and getting a Groupon had these guys slightly lower in price than movers with significantly worse ratings. Will be recommending and would use again if we stay in the metro!!
Jose and Sterling did a fantastic job moving my belongings into my condo. There were some big pieces that took some skill to get in. They put together two beds and made sure everything was exactly where I wanted it. They could have easily added on an hour but were honest and finished up quickly right at the last minute. I highly recommend you hire them as movers. The best part was you could tell they cared and took pride in their work.
Jose, Victor and Victor Jr were outstanding!!!! Fast, courteous, friendly!!!!! First time using a moving company, will definitely call them if I have to move again ! Thank you gentlemen 🙂🙂👊👊
Jose and Daveon were on time for our appointment and they were very professional. They were quick and very organized. Would definitely use Abe Lincoln Movers again
Could not be more happy with my headache free move and I actually paid what I was quoted. I was moving from Austin to Phoenix, as a single guy, and didn’t want to deal with renting a moving truck, recruiting friends or hiring some guys to help me load the truck and DEFINITELY didn’t want to drive a 15 foot box truck that distance. But I was pretty nervous about hiring movers because I’ve been ripped off once before and have heard many other nightmare stories. Even though I knew Abe Lincoln is based in Colorado I had heard good things (word of mouth) and had also been told they could move you from anywhere. I figured it couldn’t hurt to get a quote so I went ahead and called. Ron at Abe Lincoln ended up giving me a couple of quotes from full service (they load and unload) to I load the truck myself and they just drive it from TX to AZ, the quotes were more reasonable than I was expecting but I still wasn’t sure if I should try to do it myself. After giving me quotes Ron told me to feel free to call other services and see what I was able to find. I considered all options including driving the truck myself as well as moving pods. In the end I decided to take a chance and go full service. On moving day I had everything, from my packed to the gills apartment, boxed up and ready to go. Leading up to the move communication from their end was excellent, loading was a surprisingly quick process and outside of having things packed I didn’t have to lift a finger. I had to drive to AZ separately in my own car but was able to give them access to my phx place so by the time I got there, several hours after they had, they had already unloaded and left things where we had discussed. The price I was quoted was the price I paid, everything was in tact, and I could not be more satisfied. Could I have saved a couple of dollars by renting a truck and recruiting friends to help me? Probably but not enough to make up for the time I saved and peace of mind I had by just leaving it to the professionals. I obviously would highly recommend Abe Lincoln if you’re planning a move.
The best movers and moving experience. Firstly, they communicate effectively every step of the way, ensuring that you know what’s going on. Movers were prompt and on-time. Highly skilled being able to move all my items with no hassle or issue. Worked quickly yet efficiently. Jose and Roma made my experience painless. Muchas gracias! Will definitely work with them again. Prices are reasonable and fair. Ron is a great leader for his team.
These guys showed up on time with the owner Ron, and they were fantastic! Hard working guys, unloaded a 26 ft Penske truck in short order. Careful with my things, cannot say enough good things about my experience!Kevin
Massive shout out to Ron and Abe Lincoln Movers! While I didn’t go through them for my move to Denver I did reach out to them for help with donating my used boxes + packing paper that were in good condition to them. Saved me lots of trips + time to and from the recycling center so extremely grateful for that. I’ll absolutely be using them/referring them to friends for any local move here in Denver in the future. Also learned that Ron is a fellow veteran as well so nothing but love + support for veteran owned local moving company 🙌🙏
Ron, Allen and Roman were amazing. They came with no notice and were done in 2 hours. Made miracles happen. This moving company is awesome!! Wish I could give them 10 stars.
Ron and his team were incredible to work with for our interstate move! They showed up on time, loaded and unloaded our stuff lightning fast (but with minimal damage), and drove cross country efficiently. Communication was great, the price was fair, and they treated our stuff and the buildings with care. Plus they had only our stuff on the truck, and they drove directly to the destination without stops along the way for other moves. They dropped it off at the agreed upon date and time, not with some date range like other companies. I highly recommend Abe Lincoln!
Jose and Roman were so wonderful to work with. They were kind, fast, and best of all affordable! This is my second time using Abe Lincoln movers in the last 3 years and I will for sure be using them again if I need to move.
I had a great experience with Abe Lincoln Movers! Jose and Troy were super nice and helpful and they got the job done quickly. Pricing is not absurd either so I definitely recommend.
I highly recommend this company. Friendly, and arrived on time. They were very understanding when I had a payment delay and I would definitely use this company again! Jose and Sterling were very kind.
I was so impressed with Abe Lincoln Movers once again!! They helped me out last minute, handled my many items carefully, and packed a 10' truck from floor to ceiling. The owner, Ron, himself showed up to work. I appreciate Abe Lincoln Movers!!
We had a wonderful experience with Jose, Lamont and Sterling. They are incredibly hardworking and polite individuals and make a great team. We highly recommend Abe Lincoln Movers!
Reached out on Friday late day and was able to get a crew for Saturday! Showed up 15 minutes early and ready to go. Worked for a solid three hours, would highly recommend!
